Step 3: Click the New button in the top-left of the Accounts window.

Step 4: The Account Setup Assistant window will open. Click the Configure account manually button, in the bottom-left of the window

Step 6: Ensure the Include this account in my “Send & Receive All” schedule check-box is selected.

Step 7: Enter your name in the Name text-box.

Step 8: Enter the mailbox’s email address in the E-mail address text-box.

Step 9: Again, enter the mailbox’s email address in the Account ID text-box.

Step 10: Enter your incoming mail server in the POP server text-box. This is mail.yourdomain.co.uk (replace yourdomain.co.uk with your domain name).

Step 11: Enter the password you chose when you created the mailbox in the Password text-box.

Step 12: If you’d prefer to save the password, rather than having to type it in each time you access your email, click the Save password in my Mac OS keychain check-box.

Note: If you are setting up a Standard mailbox, and you connect using an ISP other than Fasthosts Broadband or Dial, you should follow your ISP’s instructions for setting up an outgoing mail server, then skip to step 16.

Step 13: In the Sending mail section, enter “smtp.fasthosts.co.uk” in the SMTP server text-box.

Note: If you are setting up a Standard mailbox using Fasthosts Broadband or Dial, skip to step 16.

Step 14: Click the Click here for advanced sending options button.

Step 15: Click the SMTP server requires authentication check-box and ensure the Use same settings as receiving mail server radio button is selected.

Quick Tip: Some ISPs block port 25 for sending email. If you have problems sending email through your advanced mailbox you should check the box marked Override default SMTP port and change the outgoing port from 25 to either 225 or 587.

Step 16: Click anywhere on the Edit Account window, then click the OK button to finish setting up your mailbox.

Exchange and Entourage 2004

Exchange mailboxes with Entourage 2004
Find your Exchange login details
To access your Exchange mailbox using Entourage 2004, you need the mailbox id and domain. This is different to how you setup a mailbox in Outlook 2003 but the same as if you were using ActiveSync.

Step 1: Log into your Fasthosts control panel and visit your Exchange mailbox’s Configure mailbox page.

Step 2: Click Mail access details.

Step 3: On the Mail access details page, scroll down to the Using a mobile device section. Make a note of the username ActiveSync.

Configuring Entourage 2004
Step 1: Open Entourage 2004, open the Tools menu and click Accounts.

Step 2: In the Accounts window, click the Exchange tab, then click New.

Step 3: The Account Setup Assistant will open. Click the Configure account manually button.

Step 4: Enter a name for your Exchange mailbox in the Account name text-box.

Step 5: Enter your name in the Name text-box. Most people that you email will see this name, rather than your email address.

Step 6: Enter your email address in the E-mail address text-box.

Step 7: Find the ActiveSync username you made a note of earlier and enter it in the Account ID text-box. Enter EXCHANGE in the Domain text-box and your Exchange mailbox password in the Password text-box.

Step 8: Enter http://exchange.livemail.co.uk in the Exchange server text-box.

Step 9: Tick the This DAV service requires a secure connection (SSL) check-box, then click the OK button.

Step 10: Close the Accounts window.

Step 11: Entourage will now connect to your Exchange mailbox and synchronise your email, contacts and calendar.

Search Engine Tricks

Having a hard time finding something online? Does it seem like you type in your search term but don’t get anywhere near what you’re looking for?

Well, here’s a couple tricks that seem (almost) universal between search engines.

Let’s say you’re looking for sports cars and all you’re getting is information on baseball and football (sports). What can you do? Try some of the following:

1. Try:

sports +cars

Most search engines will interpret this as meaning you only want results that have both the word “sports” and “cars” in them. Some search engines let you us the word “and” to do this as well (i.e. sports and cars).

2. You can also try to exclude terms. Let’s say you still aren’t getting what you want with sports cars (you still keep getting baseball info). Try something like:

sports +cars -baseball

The “-” sign tells most search engines to exclude results that have whatever word it is that has the “-” in front of it. (Don’t put a space between the – and the word to be excluded though!)

3. If the above seems too confusing, most search engines have an “advanced search” option that gives you a web-style way to help you accomplish the same thing. Instead of using “+ / -” they use drop down boxes and option buttons. It is usually easier to search this way, although it’s probably faster to use steps 1 & 2.

4. The next thing you might try is being more specific. Instead of just sports cars, maybe use exotic sports cars. Try different combinations of search terms until you get what you’re after. (Careful with that word “exotic” though!)

5. Also, you may want to try using quotes. If you type in:

“sports cars”

You should only get results that match that exact phrase in that exact order. Sometimes that can narrow things down considerably.
