In ordinary terms Social Media are websites through which people can share content, personal opinions, swap different perspectives and insights into their world. The most popular sites have bigger subscriptions that the population of most contries. Here are a few:
Social networking: these allow you to create personal profiles and interact with other users like Facebook, MySpace, Bebo.
Wikis – wikis are websites that allow you to create, edit and share information about a subject or topic. Wikipedia, for instance, is one of the world’s most popular wikis.
Video Sharing – does what it says on the tin, the biggest video sharing site is YouTube.
Photo Sharing – again easy to understand the concept with sites like Flickr.
Presence apps – these sites allow you micro blog (similar to sending a text message) to announce what you are doing now. Twitter is by far the largest of these sites.
Other forms of social media include news aggregation, social bookmarking, online gaming, blogs and forums. The list goes on.
